An Export Shipment Requires Extra Packaging
The movement and hazards of international transit are many times greater than a domestic move on U.S. highways. The roads are not always smooth, the seas are not always calm and railroads are not always tender.
This machine was packed for domestic shipment on a simple pallet with no protection and not blocked correctly in the shipping container. The pallet failed and the machine apparently broke loose inside the container and was tossed about during its trip to the United States.
Blocking and Bracing Inside a Container is Critical
Blocking and Bracing or Containerization are terms used to describe securing loads inside international shipping containers. An effective block and brace will prevent the load from moving in any direction, including vertically. Even multi-ton equipment will leave the floor in heavy seas if not blocked sufficiently from above.
This inbound load of heavy building materials was not blocked correctly so the load shifted while in transit. The container must have been in heavy seas or was bumped hard by the railroads causing intense pressure on too few timbers. The bent and broken pieces of lumber are 4x4's.
